a soft summer afternoon,
hot sun behind the flowers,
hand in hand
with you. with wild thoughts
we lie in our hysteria
saying “do you remember?”
you tell me not to
move an inch.
suppressing smiles,
we stare straight.
the only sound that
breaks the silence
is the dull flap
of a bird flying above.

in the shade at last
—your voice hotter
than the wind—
sharing words, we smile
under the wisteria.
my mind paints it
in this way
on those occasions
when happiness sees fit
to come my way.
when we think back, i’d like to think
we smile. for worse or better,
if we’d decided not to leave,
if we’d stayed forever.
we know, we know, we know.
